The Organizing Committee of the 24th International Congress on the Education of the Deaf (ICED 2025) is very pleased to invite you to the historical city of Rome, Italy, where ICED will take place from 7 to 11 July 2025. Rome is one of the most fascinating and historic cities in the world, with a history that stretches for about 3.000 years. Being a cosmopolitan metropolis with a vibrant, cultural, artistic and academic life, Rome is an ideal setting for our upcoming Congress.
ICED is the oldest and the most prestigious and influential meeting place in the field of education of deaf and hard of hearing people. It is organized every five years in different countries and attracts thousands of researchers, teachers, administrators, parents and professionals from several different fields such as psychology, medicine, audiology, linguistics, sociology, accessibility, arts, speech and language therapy and technology worldwide.
After 145 years, since 1880 ICED come back to Italy!
The first and only International Conference on Education of the Deaf hosted in Italy was the notorious Milan Conference in 1880 (2nd ICED), in which sign language was banned in educational programs for deaf children, resulting in deprivation of access to quality education and minimal equality in life for Deaf citizens all over the world.
Hosting in Rome the 24th ICED is an opportunity for social redemption by Italy, also following the sweeping repudiation of the 1880 Milan ICED resolutions made by the 2010 ICED Organizing Committee, in opening the 21st ICED in Vancouver, Canada.
The theme of ICED 2025 is “More than words”. We believe that the time has come to go beyond words, advising the need for scientific evidence to support educational choices. We also believe that it is necessary more than words to give all Deaf people the opportunity to express themselves, access education, participate in everyday life in all fields and actively contribute to decisions concerning Deaf education, using their “voice” in the language they prefer (spoken and/or signed).
Worldwide experts from different scientific areas related to education of deaf and hard of hearing learners will have the opportunity to share the latest knowledge and experience on this theme, and on related issues and to network with prominent key scientists and potential international partners for future academic, scientific and professional co-operation.
As hosts and organizers, we look forward to make your active participation to the congress scientifically rewarding and meaningful and your stay in Rome as enjoyable as possible. Congress participants will carry pleasant memories from the Italian hospitality, culture, traditions and historical heritage.
